This is a good product from a good company, but it is one with issues.
First, the computer burns hotter than hell (74degC) and will burn the flesh of anyone that feels that the term "laptop" means that you can, well, place it on your lap. Beyond that, though, the product works great...
Until it doesn't.
My experiences with HP customer support have always been positive. I have previously recommended the company to my IT department, but my recent experiences have me wondering about whether mission-critical options be left to this company. Perhaps the experience as a home user would differ from the product that they roll out to their business users, but the disparity between the two should probably concern the average buyer.
So, my experience.
As with many others my motherboard burned out on the TX2110US. I held off for a while but eventually decided that it would be absolutely great to have a decent laptop, so I talked with HP online technical support. They recommend me a service station nearby and, having no problems with them before, I took it to them.
Great?
Not so much.
I used Office Depot (the recommended service station) and they had my machine back to me in two weeks. I got the machine back and it was as slow as hell. Yeah, it's Windoze so no surprise there. I had created some recovery discs a while back so I threw them into the machine and... No joy. OEM software and new motherboard? They don't work too well together.
As I needed a workable machine, I contacted HP customer support. After going back and forwards their solution was that I should purchase a separate copy of the OS and install it on the machine. The only way that HP would resolve the situation was that if I paid an additional $300 so that they could reinstall the $80 OS.
At this point, kudos to Office Depot. They were willing to take back the machine and resolve the situation. I had managed to fix the problem so that I didn't need to take them up on their offer but, well, that's the point. Office Depot were willing to fix the problem as a continuance of the fee that I had previously paid them (remember that they're a HP-recommended service center!). HP, on the other hand, didn't care.
So, fun product? Aye, it certainly is. Good product? I enjoy it. What I certainly don't enjoy in this circumstance is HP's customer support. In this case they failed royally and did it in such a way that I have concerns buying HP products again. After all, why wouldn't they support their product?
